Apple Mail: sending e-mails from multiple addresses through a Gmail SMTP server

I had some troubles recently in sending e-mails with the Apple Mail client from multiple addresses through the Gmail SMTP server. Here is the issue. I have several mailboxes configured in Apple Mail, with several different e-mail addresses. I recently have added two more to the ones already configured but when I tried to send e-mails with the new addresses I realized that the e-mails were sent using a different e-mail address (one of those already configured). Problem: migrating from BibDesk to Mendeley with PDF links

I have been using BibDesk as a reference manager for a while now. I have mainly used it for organizing my database of references with the PDF file attached. Unfortunately BibDesk works perfectly with LyX or LATeX, but not so easily with Microsoft Word, and at least for me, it is more common to use Word to write papers than LyX or LATeX. For this reason I tried both Zotero and Mendeley to have a reference manager that could support the whole literature search, reading, cite lifecycle. My final choice was Mendeley (also because now I have all my references database and files on the iPad too). Importing the references database in Mendeley was pretty easy but…

My MacBookPro restarts everytime I leave it idle for a certain amount of time [solved]

Recently I have been experiencing occasional reboots with my MacBookPro. Usually these reboots were happening when the notebook was idle for some time. It was really annoying, especially because sometimes I wanted to leave my Mac running the whole night to complete a torrent download. I have googled the problem a couple of times and I have found hints related to the power management preferences of to problems with the battery. None of them where the right solutions for my problem, but in the end I think I have solved it.

Improved VM experience with Parallels 6

I have recently upgraded my copy of Parallels Desktop to v. 6. At first I had some problems with the virtual machine I was using quite regularly. It is a normal Windows XP based virtual machine that I use for Microsoft Office and for a trading platform. The virtual machine was not so young when I have installed Parallels 6 and, maybe this was the reason but, I have been experiencing lots of problems with it. All of a sudden it seemed to me that the virtual machine was using more CPU time. My MacBook Pro was continuously having over heating problems. All this was annoying me a little bit.

My Passport Studio – An HD for Time Machine

Time Machine is a nice backup solution for Mac. For those of you who might not be acquainted with it, Time Machine records snapshots of your system periodically. For 24 hours, provided that your system is working, it will record hourly backups. For the last month it will record daily backups, while for the previous months it will record weekly backups. When the hard disk where Time Machine records its backup is full, old backups will be deleted. Continue reading »

If you are one among those who use, like me, LyX to write texts on a Mac and you have upgraded to the new release (Snow Leopard) of the Apple operating system, than you might have noticed that LyX does not work properly on this new version of the operating system.

Indeed it is true. This year is the 40th anniversary of Armstrong’s and Aldrin’s landing on the moon and I wanted to celebrate that event (even if a bit late), with this famous quote as an overture to this article. This is the first piece of text that I write regarding the Mac OS operating system. As visitors of my website you might have guessed, from a previous post, that I have switched from Linux to Mac OS X.
