If you use CalDav with you iPhone/iPad you can access all your calendars configured in Google Calendar. But it can anyhow happen that some of them are not shown. To inform your device on which calendars have to be shown you should visit the following URL https://www.google.com/calendar/iphoneselect from the iPhone/iPad. Of course you have to do so just after having configured the CalDav account for your google calendar.

When you do so you are requested to authenticate with your google credentials and then a list of all your calendars is provided. From this list you have to check the calendars you would like to see on your mobile device. Once done, save the modifications made and go back to your calendar app. It has to sync again with the google server and after a while you will be able to see al the calendars you have selected from that list. That’s all.

For further information also visit the following Google help page: http://support.google.com/mobile/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=151674.

I had some troubles recently in sending e-mails with the Apple Mail client from multiple addresses through the Gmail SMTP server. Here is the issue. I have several mailboxes configured in Apple Mail, with several different e-mail addresses. I recently have added two more to the ones already configured but when I tried to send e-mails with the new addresses I realized that the e-mails were sent using a different e-mail address (one of those already configured). I have investigated the issue for a bit and finally found the solution…

The thing is: to authorize your new e-mail addresses you have to configure Gmail so that you can send e-mails from Gmail as if it were sent from different addresses. To do so in the Gmail settings you have to click on the link account and import. There is one option called “Send message as”. On the right you will find the list of all the e-mail addresses for which you can send emails in Gmail. Another effect of configuring Gmail to send messages as if they were sent from a different address is that you can also use the Gmail SMTP server to send e-mails from these mailboxes also in Apple Mail.

To authorize a new mailbox you just need to click on the add new address link. A simple configuration process in few steps let you configure new addresses. During this process Gmail will send a message containing a confirmation code to the e-mail address you would like to configure, and subsequently ask you to type the code. If the code you type is the same that has been sent you with the e-mail the new address is successfully configured. If so you can send e-mails as if they were sent from the new address both in the Gmail web interface, and with your Apple Mail client. Of course in Apple Mail you have to use the Gmail SMTP server to send your e-mails.

I have been using BibDesk as a reference manager for a while now. I have mainly used it for organizing my database of references with the PDF file attached. Unfortunately BibDesk works perfectly with LyX or LATeX, but not so easily with Microsoft Word, and at least for me, it is more common to use Word to write papers than LyX or LATeX. For this reason I tried both Zotero and Mendeley to have a reference manager that could support the whole literature search, reading, cite lifecycle. My final choice was Mendeley (also because now I have all my references database and files on the iPad too). Importing the references database in Mendeley was pretty easy but…

… I had many PDF files linked (about 280) to the references in BibDesk, but unfortunately Mendeley was able to import only few of them (less than 40). After some investigation I have discovered that BibDesk encodes (base 64) pdf files link. These encoded links are not (currently) recognized and decoded by Mendeley. I have browsed the internet to look for some solutions and I have found two links on the Mendeley website mentioning the issue (http://feedback.mendeley.com/forums/4941-mendeley-feedback/suggestions/455825-import-pdfs-added-from-bibdesk, http://feedback.mendeley.com/forums/4941-mendeley-feedback/suggestions/80946-automatically-find-pdfs-link-them-to-imported-me). None of the solutions proposed in those web pages worked for me, so I wrote a php script to fix the issue and… it worked. I now have all my references and all my PDF file linked in Mendeley.

The source of the script is provided below. If none of the solutions mentioned in the previous webpages work for you too, you could try this script. Feel free to use and modify it. What you (for sure) need to modify is to change the string “Users/macbookpro/Documents” to suit the full path where all your pdf files are located.

<?php
// Usage:
// bash> php bibtek_decode_file_link.php bibtekfile.bib > decoded_bibtekfile.bib

// Check syntax - at least a filename must be given
if ($argc < 2)
{
	echo "Syntax: " . $argv[0] . " filename [prefix]";
}
else
{
	echo "Processing " . $argv[1] . "\n";

	// Read file line by line

	if ($fh = fopen($argv[1], 'r'))
	{
 while ($fl = fgets($fh))
 {
 if (strpos($fl, 'Bdsk-File'))
 {
 // String found
 $poss = strpos($fl, '{');
 $pose = strpos($fl, '}');

 $entry = substr($fl, $poss + 1, $pose-$poss);
 $final_char = substr($fl, $pose + 1);

 // Decode entry

 $decoded_entry = base64_decode($entry);

 // Find file path

 $posfs = strpos($decoded_entry, "Users/macbookpro/Documents");
 $sub_entry = substr($decoded_entry, $posfs);
 $pospdf = strpos($sub_entry, ".pdf");
 $sub_entry = '/'. substr($sub_entry, 0, $pospdf + 4);

 echo sprintf("\tFile = {%s}%s\n", $sub_entry, $final_char);
 }
 else
 {
 // String not found - keep dumping output
 echo $fl;
 }
 }
	}
	else echo "Error opening " . $argv[1] . "\n";
}
?>

If, like me, you frequently find yourselves in the necessity to write e-mails or text in two (or more than two) languages, you probably have realized that writing in a language different from the one that is currently set in the iOS is really extremely irritating. The predictive typing engine of iOS will continuously change the words you type with possible suggestions found in the dictionary. You can imagine what happens when you write in english and the dictionary is in italian.

Fortunately there is a quick solution that works both for the iPhone and for the iPad.

What it is needed to do is just to go into the General Settings of the iPhone or iPad, then go in International, and tap the entry Keyboards. There you will find a list of the keyboards currently configured to be used with your device (there should normally be only one). If you tap on “Add new” under this list, you will be able to add new keboards to the list.

After having added a new keyboard, in every occasion that the iOS will pop up the keyboard, you will see that a new button showing a globe appeared at the left of the keyboard. If you simply tap on this key the iOS will cycle through all the keyboards installed. If you tap and keep your finger on the key, you will see the list of available keyboards and be able to choose the one you want to use. When you switch the keyboard the layout and the dictionary will be changed accordingly and you could easily type in the new language.

All these instructions of course apply to iOS devices like the iPhone and the iPad.

It has been a while since I have installed Viber and Whatsapp in my IPhone 4. For longtime I have been not albe to test nor to use them since I did not find other users that were among my contacts but now that these two apps have spread a little bit, I have had a chance to use them.
What can I say then? First of all that they rock, Viber above the other. Second that it is funny to play with. I just have one concern regarding Whatsapp. Since Viber integrates both the VOIP functionalities with the text chat, Whatsapp seems less necessary. Nevertheless the chat in Whatsapp is slightly better than the one in Viber (which has also been a recent development), so is it worth having installed both of them?.

It was really annoying, especially because sometimes I wanted to leave my Mac running the whole night to complete a torrent download. I have googled the problem a couple of times and I have found hints related to the power management preferences of to problems with the battery. None of them where the right solutions for my problem, but in the end I think I have solved it.

I was not aware of this, but in the preference pane, under Security, there is an option that forces the system to logout when it has been idle for 60 minutes. In my case it was enabled and that was causing the problem. I have disabled it and now everything seems to be fine .

I think the title of this post is self explanatory, but I repeat it one more time: I am impressed. I am in the middle of an intense work session with Microsoft Word for Mac since I am writing a monograph. This time I decided not to use LyX for writing the text and rather use the newest version of Microsoft Word for Mac, the 2011. I have to admit that I was not 100% fine with this decision, but since my editor provided me with templates for Word and no templates for LATeX, and also since because I am writing the monograph really in a hurry, then I have decided to go for Microsoft Word. And what was the result?I think I have clearly stated in the title of the post . Well, just to be more precise, I have to say that I am positively impressed. I am actually at page 138 of the monograph. The text contains:

a Table of Contents;

several sections;

several graphs;

several tables;

an automatically generated bibliography.

The file is about 20Mb in size. Word is quite slow when it opens or saves the file. It really looks like it is freezing in these cases, but it is not.

I am surprised that I could author this text with this word processor. My previous experiences with Microsoft Word for Mac where not so positive. Of course I have had a couple of incidents in the process of writing (the most serious one caused the loss of the entire work of one day due to the corruption of the file, but likely I had a backup), and from time to time Word crashes, but this is far below the expected average and I am completely fine with it.

What can I say. Congratulations to Microsoft’s engineers. Could Microsoft Word 2011 be the first piece of Microsoft’s software that I like? Maybe. So far I only look forward to writing the next article .

This is just a quick post. When I have created the Google Analytics account I remember that I have created a sort of a filter that prevented Analytics to record also my visits on the website. But all this has happened many months ago, and now I no longer remember what have I done and how.

Since I have noticed that the analytics log was showing strange behaviors of visitors on my blog, I have thought that probably that filter would not have been in place for word press too. This is why I have googled the problem a little bit and I have eventually identified a solution.

I write it here for future memories. The following URL describes three different methods to filter your traffic on Analytics. Each method is suitable for a specific situation. I have used the second and it seems that for me (at least) it works fine. Have fun. Oh by the way. Here is the URL: http://www.techtipsgeek.com/ignore-own-blog-visits-google-analytics-traffic-report/5765/.
